Gladiator 2 Set Photos Reveal Construction of a New Colosseum

KISS | June 28, 2023

Production is underway on Ridley Scott’s long-awaited sequel to the 2000 year old historical epic Gladiator, and new set photos have given us our first glimpse at the film’s impressive Colosseum set.

The photos, which were shared on Twitter by the fan account Paul Mescal Updates, show a large wooden arena being constructed in the Moroccan desert. The arena is similar in size and shape to the Colosseum in Rome, but it appears to be made of a different material. This could be a clue that the film is set in a different time period than the original Gladiator, or that it is simply taking a different artistic approach to the setting.

In addition to the Colosseum, the set photos also show a number of other structures, including a marketplace, a temple, and a number of residential buildings. These photos give us a good sense of the scale and scope of the film’s production, and they suggest that Gladiator 2 will be a visually stunning epic.

The cast of Gladiator 2 includes Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, and Barry Keoghan. Mescal will play Lucius, the young nephew of Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) who was inspired by Maximus (Russell Crowe) in the original film. Washington and Keoghan are playing undisclosed roles.

Gladiator 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 22, 2023.
