Dua Lipa faces third copyright lawsuit over Levitating

KISS | August 3, 2023

Dua Lipa is facing a third copyright lawsuit over her hit song Levitating. The lawsuit, filed on July 31, 2023, alleges that Lipa’s song copies a recording made by musician Bosko Kante.

Kante claims that he created the recording in 2011 and that he gave Lipa’s team permission to use it in the original version of Levitating. However, he alleges that they did not have permission to use it in the remixes of the song.

The lawsuit seeks damages of at least $20 million.

This is the third copyright lawsuit that Lipa has faced over Levitating. In March 2022, a Florida reggae band, Artikal Sound System, sued Lipa, alleging that her song copies their 2017 song Live Your Life. That lawsuit was dismissed in June 2023.

In December 2022, two songwriters, L. Russell Brown and Sandy Linzer, sued Lipa, alleging that her song copies their 1979 song Wiggle and Giggle All Night. That lawsuit is still pending.

Levitating was released in 2020 and was a global hit, reaching number one in over 20 countries. It has been streamed over 1 billion times on Spotify.

It remains to be seen how the third lawsuit against Lipa will be resolved. However, it is clear that the song has been the subject of much controversy.
