Pharrell Makes a Speedy Escape from Overly Enthusiastic (and Aim-Challenged) Crowd

KISS | March 13, 2024

Move over, Indiana Jones, because Pharrell Williams just narrowly escaped a shower of… glowsticks? Yep, you read that right. The “Happy” singer had to cut his set short at the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix after the audience, in a misguided attempt to recreate a starry night sky, decided to launch their light-up wristbands at the stage.

Here’s the thing, folks, those wristbands might be fun to wave around, but they’re not exactly Nerf bullets. Pharrell, ever the diplomat (and dodge master, apparently), tried to reason with the overzealous crowd. “This is the liveliest city on the planet right now,” he said, “but we also gotta be the safest!” He even proposed a compromise: a synchronized wristband throw skyward. Alas, his pleas fell on deaf ears (or maybe just poorly coordinated arms).

So, what did Pharrell do? Did he unleash his inner diva and storm off in a huff? Nope! He did what any self-respecting musician with questionable projectile reflexes would do: politely excused himself. “I’m gonna let you all finish,” he announced, before executing a tactical retreat that would make even ninjas jealous.

Look, we all love a good concert, but there’s a fine line between getting hyped and turning the mosh pit into a game of whack-a-celebrity. Here’s hoping next time, the crowd channels their excitement into, you know, actual dancing. In the meantime, kudos to Pharrell for keeping his cool (and probably a few bumps) at bay
