Yo, It’s Been 19 Years Since the First-Ever YouTube Video: Remember “Me at the Zoo”?

KISS | April 24, 2024

Can you believe it? It’s been a whopping 19 years since the very first video ever hit
YouTube! Yep, on this day way back in 2005, YouTube wasn’t even a thing yet, but it all
started with a grainy, 19-second clip titled “Me at the Zoo.”
The video, uploaded by YouTube co-founder Jawed Karim, features him (guess who?)
standing in front of some elephants at the San Diego Zoo. Not exactly the most
action-packed content, but hey, it was a start! Think of it as the tiny little seed that grew into
the giant video-sharing platform we know and love today.
Back then, YouTube was a small project between a couple of buds. Now? It’s a global
phenomenon where you can find everything from cat videos (of course) to makeup tutorials,
music videos, and even educational lectures (mind blown, right?).
So next time you’re scrolling through YouTube, losing yourself in a rabbit hole of funny fails
or adorable animal compilations, take a moment to appreciate “Me at the Zoo.” It may not be

the most high-tech video out there, but it’s a reminder of how far YouTube has come and
how it’s changed the way we watch, share, and create videos.
Here’s to 19 years of YouTube, and many more to come! Who knows what crazy, amazing
videos we’ll see uploaded in the next 19 years? Maybe even someone will film themselves
chilling with elephants at the zoo – again!
